The Dien Bien Phu victory on May 7, 1954 had a profound impact on Vietnamese history and on the world, paving the way for independence movements among people in colonial countries worldwide.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Vu Huy, Director of the Vietnam Military History Museum, said: “With this resounding victory, the Vietnamese people achieved a miracle, etching it into national history and world history as a brilliant triumph. The French colonialists were forced to sign the Geneva Agreement, ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina. The Dien Bien Phu victory was attributable to the wise and skillful leadership of the Party Central Committee and President Ho Chi Minh, patriotism, the great national solidarity, and the winning spirit of the Vietnamese People's Army.”

70 papers were submitted to the conference, highlighting the historical circumstances of the Dien Bien Phu campaign; the leadership of the Party Central Committee and President Ho Chi Minh; the fighting spirit and solidarity between the armies and people of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam and the tremendous support of the Soviet Union, China, and other socialist countries; and lessons learned from the Dien Bien Phu campaign.
